Comet Assistant helps you summarize pages, automate tasks, and retrieve information — while keeping privacy as the default. This article explains what data stays local, what may be sent to Perplexity, and how long it is retained.

What Stays on Your Device

By default, Comet Assistant does not access or upload the following:

  • Browsing history

  • Full list of your open tabs

  • Cookies or site data

  • Passwords and autofill data

  • Local files

  • Input you type on websites (unless you explicitly send it in a request)

These remain stored locally inside Comet and your operating system.

When Data Is Sent to Perplexity

Comet sends data only when a request requires it.
Examples:

  • Summarizing the current tab

  • Extracting information from selected text

  • Completing a task that needs email/calendar access

  • Asking about content in another tab using @tab

In these cases, only the minimal required context is sent — not your full browsing history or all tab contents.

Perplexity does not sell this data.

Retention of Assistant-Related Data

If a request requires context from:

  • Page content,

  • History items, or

  • Open tabs (via @tab or multi-tab summary),

then this context is stored securely for up to 30 days to power Library and query history features, and is automatically deleted after that.

Such threads are marked as Temporary threads in your Perplexity library, where you can remove expiration timer or delete a thread.

Agent Launch Permissions (First-Run Prompt)

When an advanced agent or automation is triggered for the first time, Comet asks whether you’re comfortable running it:

You can choose:

  • Allow this time only

  • Always allow (suppress future prompts)

  • Don’t allow

This ensures agents never operate without your explicit approval.

How to Limit or Disable Assistant Data Use

You can control Assistant behavior in:

Settings → Privacy and security → Comet Assistant

Options:

  • Disable Comet Assistant entirely

  • Block Assistant on specific websites
