Philosophy

Build knowledge.

Applications are highly competitive. Applicants are evaluated on both hard skills, like technical expertise, and soft skills, like communication.

Approach

Applications are judged solely on merit and potential impact to Perplexity as a company and as a product. All applicants are expected to demonstrate frontier knowledge and excellence in at least one area. All roles are expected to be hands-on: even those in management positions are expected to be able to zoom in and maintain context across the stack.

Ideology

Before applying, please review our mission and values to check if Perplexity might be a good long-term fit for you and your working style.

Teams

By default, all roles are broad: unless otherwise specified, roles accept candidates with a diverse range of experiences and levels. We are focused on hiring great people first and organizational structure second. Precise team matching happens during the onsite process.

Location

All roles list preferred locations to promote in-office collaboration and open communication. Teammates that are near one of our office locations are expected to work in-person at least 4 days a week. Remote candidates are considered on a case-by-case basis: if you do not see a role that perfectly fits with your remote location, please apply to the closest timezone.

Hiring Timeline

Application

Online Application

When applying, please find the role that looks like the best fit with your skillset. Expect to hear back from us within two weeks, following our initial review of your application. Please apply even if you cannot find a perfect fit or do not match every possible requirement; choose the closest role based on your judgement and tailor your application to that role by describing relevant past experiences and projects.

Interviews

Phone Screen

A recruiter will schedule an initial phone screen.

Technical Assessment

If a potential fit is found, we will move into a technical screening step. For engineers, this is usually a standard technical programming interview.

Onsite

If all goes well with the initial screening, we will quickly follow up by scheduling an onsite with 4-5 interviews, including a deep dive with a hiring manager. A recruiter will brief you on the detailed preparation and materials needed for the onsite. For the deep dive, be prepared to discuss past work and experience anecdotes in detail. Following the onsite, a final interview will be scheduled with a Perplexity founder or leader.

Team Matching

Matching is flexible and happens during the onsite interview process. The hiring manager for the interview process will describe potential teams and try their best to match to the right team.

Offer

Decision

Within a week of the onsite, a decision will be made and an offer will be sent if all goes well.

Post-Offer

Congratulations! Additional conversations will be scheduled after the offer to help candidates learn more about Perplexity, talk to prospective teammates, and iterate on the matching process.

Application Tips

In the initial application, include details of your personal contributions to projects (without breaking confidentiality) and provide evidence of ownership.

Before interviewing, use Perplexity itself, explore the product, and think about exciting areas where your work would uplevel the quality.

Don't worry about prestige, credentials, or titles: our interviewing process is designed to be meritocratic regardless of background. Anyone who is interested in working at Perplexity but comes from a nontraditional background is encouraged to apply to our Resident Program.

For technical roles: prepare for the onsites by refreshing your knowledge of the full tech stack, which is mentioned in the job description. Prior experience with the exact tech stack is not a requirement but conceptual understanding of foundations is required.

Avoid buzzwords and precisely describe your skillset: expect that all skills listed on the application are fair game to be evaluated.

For the onsite: curate practical work examples, especially for design, product, and UI engineering roles.
