Before you start

  • Voice mode is available to Pro and Max subscribers.
  • On the web, use a desktop browser. Voice mode is not available in mobile browsers.
  • For the Mac app, install the Perplexity app for Mac and sign in. See Get started with the desktop apps.
  • Allow microphone access when your browser or Mac asks for it.

What you can do with voice mode

Voice mode lets you hold a natural, back-and-forth conversation with Perplexity while it works for you.
  • Move around Perplexity: Ask voice mode to open a page, find and open one of your artifacts, or create and manage Projects.
  • Work across sessions: Work across several Perplexity Computer sessions at once, and start new tasks without ending the conversation.
  • Use your connectors and models: Pull in your connected apps and data, or ask for the model you want to use for a task.
  • Start work on your Mac: In the Mac app, voice mode can also start work on your own computer.

How to start voice mode on the web

  1. Open perplexity.ai in a desktop browser and sign in.
  2. Start a new task, so the input box is empty. The voice mode button does not appear in the input box for a follow-up.
  3. Select the voice mode button in the input box.
  4. If your browser asks for microphone access, allow it.
  5. Speak your request.
While voice mode is on, a voice mode panel stays open as you move around Perplexity. Use the panel to mute your microphone, collapse the panel without ending the conversation, or end voice mode.

How to start voice mode in the Mac app

  1. Open the Perplexity app on your Mac.
  2. Start a new task, so the input box is empty.
  3. Select the voice mode button in the input box, or hold FN.
  4. If your Mac asks for microphone access, allow it.
  5. Speak your request.
To end voice mode, select the stop button that replaces the voice mode button in the input box. To view or change the voice shortcut, see Work with Browsers and Apps.

How to verify it worked

When voice mode is on, Perplexity listens and answers you out loud. On the web, the voice mode panel is open. When you ask for an action, such as opening a Project, Perplexity carries it out while you keep talking.
