# How to verify your student status

<p><b>How do I sign up for the Perplexity web app as a student?</b></p>

<p><b>How do I verify my student status if I have an existing account?</b></p>

<p>Perplexity accounts can be created with any email (personal or student). If you have an existing account, click upgrade in the bottom left corner of the app, toggle to the Education plan, and click “Verify as student.”</p>

<p><b>Why am I getting a VPN error when if I’m not using a VPN?</b></p>

<p>Please clear your cache and attempt to re-verify. If the problem persists, please contact SheerID for support <a href="https://support.sheerid.com/en-US/help-center/contact-form" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>

<p><b>Why isn’t my school included on the list of available institutions?</b></p>

<p>You may submit a request to SheerID to add your academic institution <a href="https://support.sheerid.com/en-US/681d40e03e7a8077098cb1b6/asr" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>

<p><b>I need to transfer my subscription to a different email address. Will I retain my student benefits?</b></p>

<p>No, student discounts are not transferrable, and using them with a new email address requires verifying again with SheerID.</p>
