# What is Research mode?

> Research is Perplexity's advanced research feature that conducts in-depth research and analysis on your behalf, saving you hours of time.

<p>It performs dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources, and reasons through the material to autonomously deliver a comprehensive report. It completes most research tasks in under 3 minutes, which means it can take around 4 to 5 minutes to generate a response.</p>

    <p><b>Research with reasoning</b>: Uses search and coding capabilities to iteratively search, read documents, and reason about next steps, "refining its research plan as it learns more about the subject areas"</p>
  </li>

    <p><b>Report writing</b>: After evaluating source materials, "synthesizes all the research into a clear and comprehensive report"</p>
  </li>

  <li>
    <p><b>Export & Share</b>: Allows you to export the final report to PDF or document, or convert it to a Perplexity Page to share with others</p>

<p>You can access it by selecting "Research" from the mode selector in the search box in the mobile, web browser, and Mac app versions of the app.</p>

<h2 id="h_9232ec0c69">Can I pick a model when using Research?</h2>

<p>Research uses a specific combination of models to generate in-depth reports for complex topics. This mode automatically selects the optimal models for your research needs, so you cannot manually choose a specific model when using Research.</p>
