# Why Comet asks for Keychain or Credential Manager access

> Learn why Comet triggers a macOS Keychain or Windows Credential Manager prompt when importing browser passwords, and what happens if you deny access.

<p>When you import passwords or other data (like bookmarks and history) from another browser, your operating system may show a prompt asking for access to its secure storage — <b>Keychain Access</b> on macOS or <b>Credential Manager</b> on Windows.</p>

<p><br />Browsers store passwords inside these protected system vaults, and your OS controls the handoff between them.</p>

<p>Granting access simply allows macOS or Windows to <b>decrypt and transfer</b> the passwords you selected to import.</p>

<p><br />Comet itself never sees or stores your vault directly — the transfer happens locally and securely through the system’s APIs.</p>

<p><b>If you deny the request:</b></p>

    <p>Bookmarks and history will still import normally.</p>
  </li>

  <li>
    <p>Passwords and saved logins won’t be transferred.</p>
  </li>
